3% increase in electricity bill in April

For a second consecutive year, businesses and SMEs will have to face an increase of more than 5% in their electricity bills while residential customers will see their monthly electricity statements capped at 3%.

From 1er April 2024, the electricity bill of residential and agricultural customers will increase by 3%. According to the scenarios presented by Hydro-Québec, this should result in a monthly increase of approximately $2.35 for tenants of a five and a half room apartment (68 m2).

For small and medium-sized houses (between 111 m2 and 158 m2), the increase would rather oscillate between $4.39 and $5.82. As for them, owners of large houses (207 m2) could face an increase of more or less $7.17 per month.

However, businesses and SMEs will have to pay an increase of 5.1%. This will be added to last year’s historic increase (6.4%). An adjustment which excludes customers benefiting from Tariff L, i.e. the high-power industrial tariff. For this rate, the Régie de l’énergie will decide in the coming weeks on a possible increase of 3.3%.
