2nd intermission | Canadian 1 — Coyotes 2

(Tempe) The Montreal Canadiens try to extend their streak of games with at least one point to four on Thursday when they visit the Arizona Coyotes. After two periods, the score was 2-1 for the Coyotes.

Nick Schmaltz opened the scoring in the first period by taking advantage of a penalty shot. Canadian defenseman Justin Barron created the opportunity when he got his hands on the puck in Jake Allen’s semi-circle.

It was a third penalty shot awarded to the Canadian’s opponents in his last three games.

Nick Bjugstad hit the post a few minutes later.

Sean Monahan took advantage of a power play to bring the two teams back to equal footing.

He scored in a fourth straight game, having six goals — four on the power play and two on the penalty kill — in 10 outings this season.

A goal by Canadian captain Nick Suzuki late in the period was overturned after video review due to offside.

Logan Cooley is off to an excellent start to his career, having totaled seven points (one goal, six assists) in his first nine games in the NHL before this duel.

Drafted third overall in 2022, he plays a first match against Juraj Slafkovsky, first selection last year. The Slovakian has only obtained one assist this season.

Both players were shut out in the first period.

Forward Jesse Ylonen was back in the lineup after being left out of the previous two games. He replaced Michael Pezzetta in the lineup.

The Canadian will finish a three-game trip out West on Saturday in St. Louis. He will then return to Montreal for the visit of the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday.
