New floods have killed 29 people since Wednesday in Afghanistan, already affected by floods which have left around a hundred dead in recent weeks, an official spokesperson announced on Saturday.
“According to preliminary data […] 29 people were killed due to rains and floods and seven were injured,” announced an official of the Department of Natural Disaster Management, Janan Sayeq.
These victims were deplored in ten provinces of the country, no region of which was spared, the spokesperson said in a video statement.
A thousand hectares of agricultural land were submerged and 72 houses destroyed, he added.
Since April 12, more than 130 people have died in floods in Afghanistan, according to reports successively announced by Janan Sayeq.
Some 25,000 people received material and financial assistance from the government and international organizations over the past month, he said.
Afghanistan, which experienced a very dry winter making it more difficult for the soil to absorb rain, is very vulnerable to climatic upheavals.
This country ravaged by four decades of war and which is among the poorest in the world is one of the most poorly prepared to face the consequences of climate change, according to scientists.
