273,000 euros for the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church in Lizières

The good news fell in August: the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church in Lizières, a town located south-east of La Souterraine, caught the attention of Stéphane Bern. The 15th century building was selected to receive financial aid, thanks to the heritage lottery. This Monday, December 20, the Heritage Mission reveals the amounts: the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church benefits from an endowment of 273,000 euros.

Like all the other projects, the church of Lizières is in peril. Water infiltration weakens the roof, to the point that the town hall has removed the strings from the bells. If these are sounded, the vibrations could be dangerous. Because of these infiltrations, algae also proliferate on the facade. The town hall has ordered analyzes: repairs cost 583,000 euros, an exorbitant sum for a town of 262 inhabitants.

The sum allocated by the Heritage Mission is therefore crucial in trying to save the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church in Lizières. It will be used to initiate the first phase of the work: securing the roof of the church and resuming the masonry. The interior design and the restoration of the paintings will come later.
