Following the shipwreck off Calais, the emergency services found the corpses of 27 migrants, who were trying to reach England when their boat capsized. This chilling assessment is not yet final and the emergency services are continuing their research.

This is the worst known tragedy on the French coast for three years. While a migrant boat was trying to reach the English coast, it capsized. For the time being, 27 deaths are to be deplored, and the emergency services are continuing their maritime operations, in search of new bodies. Several firefighters are on site to ensure the state of health of the migrants who survived this deadly boat in the English Channel.

On the afternoon of November 24, a fisherman discovered about fifteen floating bodies offshore. Several ships of the French Navy, the gendarmerie and rescuers at sea were then mobilized to retrieve the 27 deceased migrants. Meanwhile, on the British side of the Channel, several rescuers are dispatched to save other boats. 31,500 migrants have tried to reach the UK since the start of the year. “We are dealing with a human tragedy (…) We must really consider that Calais is today a border island and that it must put in place measures to prevent these passages which unfortunately only lead to death”, deplores Natacha Bouchart, the mayoress (LR) of Calais
