Monday, May 16, 265 Ukrainian fighters who were holed up in the Azovstal factory in Mariupol were reportedly evacuated. Some are in serious condition. For the moment, they are in the hands of the Russians.

A month is the time the Ukrainian soldiers spent entrenched in the industrial complex of Azovtal, before surrendering to their Russian opponents. Among these soldiers evacuated by truck to two towns controlled by Vladimir Putin’s troops, 51 are seriously injured. The government of Volodymyr Zelensky hopes to proceed to an exchange with the Russian prisoners held by the Ukrainian forces.

To allow their country time to build up reserves, the soldiers held out and resisted for several weeks. The important thing now for the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, is to treat the wounded soldiers because, for him, “Ukraine needs its living heroes, that’s our principle”. Mariupol is now fully under the control of Russian troops, while there are still soldiers to be evacuated from Azovtal.
