Crisis in Haiti: 250 foreign nationals evacuated
(France 2)
Plagued by gang warfare and chaos, nearly 250 French and foreign nationals were evacuated from Haiti aboard French army ships.
After three days at sea aboard a helicopter carrier, the 243 evacuees from Haiti cried out in relief. They set foot on French soil, in Martinique, Friday March 29. In particular, 163 French people were evacuated. “Suddenly we received a call. You leave part of the family behind, you leave everything you have“, notes a woman. In Fort-de-France, the survivors were welcomed for a few hours in a gymnasium, but many say they are worried for their loved ones. “We receive a lot of news, but when we receive the audios, we hear that there is shooting nearby“, says an evacuated woman.
1,000 French nationals are still in Haiti
In Haiti, chaos is general. Gangs control 80% of the capital. A cataclysmic situation, says the UN on Saturday March 30. Despite the shooting, the French army managed to evacuate more than 200 people by air. “A helicopter was hit. Fortunately, no one inside was injured“, says Captain Adrien Schaar. The evacuation operation mobilized three military ships. Nearly 1,000 French nationals are still in Haiti. They are mainly dual nationals.
