Cléty, a small village of 800 inhabitants, near Saint-Omer, in Pas-de-Calais, will welcome 250 more residents within five months, Chinese workers sent as part of the major decarbonization project at the Eqiom cement factory de Lumbres, reports France Bleu Nord. The objective is to ultimately make it possible to trap the CO2 emitted during the manufacture of cement, to sequester it in the North Sea. And so it was a Chinese company, CBMI, which was commissioned to build a new oven.

These workers directly from China will be installed eight kilometers from the cement plant from September, and for two years, explains France Bleu. This “additional village” will be made up of bungalows, with a relaxation room and canteen. A bus will be chartered to take the workers from their “home base” to the Lumbres cement plant. On weekends, they can also take a minibus to visit the surrounding area.

The news surprised the mayor, Serge Lavogez, met by France Bleu Nord: “I thought it was a joke […] It’s a surprise, it’s not easy to explain to people.” Surprise also for the residents, who learned the news during an information meeting on Monday, reports France Bleu Nord. In two years, at the end of the work planned at the cement plant, the workers will return to China, the bungalows will be dismantled and the land rehabilitated, details France Bleu Nord.
