A 24-year-old Australian was taken into police custody after attempting to disrupt the men’s 100m race at the Stade de France (Seine-Saint-Denis) on Sunday evening, franceinfo learned from concordant sources on Monday 5 August.
According to a source close to the case, this young Australian tried to enter the running track shortly before the 100m, around 9:55pm, wearing a T-shirt with “Free Palestine”, “Free Ukraine” and “Jesus” written on it. A police source added that the young man was immediately intercepted by a steward. He is already known for having disrupted a cricket match in India last year, also wearing a T-shirt calling for an end to the bombing of Palestine. He was taken into custody on Sunday for “entering a playing area of a sports venue disrupting the progress of a competition”.
On Sunday evening, while the nine men’s 100m runners had been ready to set off for several minutes on the starting line, the waiting time before the start of the race surprised commentators and spectators.
