The Formula 1 Grand Prix of Canada will take place from June 7-9, 2024, the premier series of motorsport revealed when unveiling its calendar for the next season on Wednesday.
“The 24 stages of the 2024 season will take a big step towards the regionalization of the calendar,” F1 wrote on its official Twitter account, adding next season’s calendar.
But this will obviously not be the case for the Canadian Grand Prix, a North American stopover inserted between two events presented on European soil.
The Canadian Grand Prix will be the ninth round of the season, and will take place one week after the Monaco Grand Prix. The Spanish Grand Prix will follow the Montreal event, from June 21 to 23.
Concerned about its ecological footprint, F1 has already set up a plan with the aim of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030, and to achieve this the series is considering many avenues – including the regionalization of the calendar, in order to reduce distances covered during the championship.
For his part, the promoter of the Canadian Grand Prix, François Dumontier, has always been clear about his intentions to preserve the Montreal race at the beginning of June, in particular because of the Canadian climatic realities.
“We want to make the world spectacle of Formula 1 more environmentally friendly and more enjoyable for the staff who devote a large part of their time to our sport. Stefano Domenicali and his team have done an excellent job of both inserting exciting new venues in emerging markets for Formula 1 and staying true to the sport’s long and remarkable heritage,” said Formula 1 Chairman Mohammed Ben Sulayem. The Canadian Grand Prix is not the only anomaly noted on the 2024 calendar, however.
First, the season will get under way with two races presented on Saturday. The Bahrain Grand Prix will kick off the campaign on March 2, followed a week later by the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
Then, the Miami Grand Prix, the sixth round of the season which should take place from May 3 to 5, is also inserted between the Chinese Grand Prix (April 19 to 21) and that of Emilia-Romagna (May 17 to 19). ).
The true North American segment will instead consist of four races, and will begin with the United States Grand Prix, in Austin, Texas, from October 18-20. The Mexican Grand Prix (October 25 to 27), the Brazilian Grand Prix (1er to November 3) and the Las Vegas Grand Prix (November 21 to 23 — a Saturday) will complete this sequence.
The 23e stopover of the campaign will take place in Qatar, from November 29 to 1er December, and the season will be closed with the presentation of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, from December 6 to 8.
The Canadian Grand Prix took place from June 16-18 this season. The event, the eighth of the season, was won by Red Bull driver Max Verstappen.
