23 people died in a bus accident, announces the regional director of Health

Twenty-three people were killed and 36 injured in a bus accident on Wednesday August 17 southeast of Casablanca, Morocco, according to a report from regional health authorities. It is one of the deadliest traffic dramas in the country in recent years. Local authorities did not mention foreign tourists among the victims.

The vehicle overturned in a curve on a national road in the province of Khouribga, 125 kilometers south of Casablanca. The coach provided the connection between the megalopolis of Casablanca and the rural region of Aït Aatab, near the town of Beni Mellal, at the foot of the High Atlas. An investigation was opened, while theThe wounded were evacuated to the provincial hospital of Khouribga.

In Morocco, the traffic accidents cause an average of nearly 3,500 deaths and 12,000 serious injuries each year, an average of 10 deaths and 33 serious injuries per day, according to statistics from the National Road Safety Agency (NARSA).

The Moroccan authorities have however implemented a series of measures to try to combat the scourge of road insecurity following the worst bus accident in the country’s history in 2012. 42 people died at the time.
