Brian Kingston, president of the association that represents Ford, General Motors and Stellantis in Canada, says a nationwide charging network takes years of careful planning to ensure stations are available when and where people are. need in their travels.

However, Mr. Kingston believes that Canada did not plan this operation and is taking isolated actions, with very modest objectives compared to what we see elsewhere in the world.

Europe is targeting a public charger for 10 electric vehicles, California one for seven. Meanwhile, Canada is hoping for a charger for 20 electric vehicles by 2025 and one for 49 by 2050.

The International Energy Agency says Canada currently has 0.06 chargers for every electric vehicle on the road.

Canada is in the early stages of its plan to ensure that all passenger cars and light trucks sold in the country will be “zero-emission” vehicles by 2035. This new mandatory target, moved forward by five years, has been announced. by Ottawa last June.

Mr. Kingston believes that this goal will only be achieved if the electric vehicle is affordable and charging is easy and accessible.
