2024 Radar Map Released: Discover the Most Monitored Areas

The Ministry of the Interior has updated the fixed speed camera map in France, revealing 3,268 active cameras as of October 2024. This data, covering various categories of cameras, highlights significant growth in installations from 2020 to 2024. New Aquitaine has the highest concentration with 411 cameras, while Île-de-France and Occitanie follow. In contrast, overseas territories and Corsica have notably fewer cameras, underscoring regional disparities in speed monitoring across the country.

Exciting Update on Fixed Speed Cameras in France

Great news! The Ministry of the Interior has finally taken the initiative to refresh the map of fixed speed cameras across France. This presents an excellent opportunity to evaluate the extent of monitoring and identify the regions with the highest concentration of these devices.

An Overview of Speed Camera Data

For several years, the government struggled to maintain current information regarding active speed cameras in the country. As pointed out by our colleagues at L’Argus, the limited numerical data available primarily originates from incomplete annual reports on fines, parliamentary documentation, or assessments from the Court of Auditors. Unfortunately, these reports often emerge months after the data is originally gathered, making it challenging to obtain an accurate snapshot of speed cameras in France.

To illustrate the situation, the Road Safety department provides an interactive speed camera map. However, the last update of this resource dates back to April 19, 2024, which means significant changes could have occurred by then.

But the wait is over! The Ministry of the Interior has updated the official list of fixed speed cameras in France, as of October 2024, detailing a total of 3,268 fixed automatic speed cameras located throughout the country.

This comprehensive data encompasses seven categories of fixed speed cameras (ETD, ETT, ETU, ETVM, ETFR, ETPN) operating in both mainland France and overseas territories. Notably, the installation of new generation speed cameras has surged dramatically from 2020 to 2024, with 1,274 devices installed in just four years. However, it’s worth mentioning that the report does not provide information regarding the number of flashes from each camera, nor does it include mobile and autonomous cameras.

Regions with the Highest Camera Density

Now, the question arises: which regions boast the most fixed speed cameras in France? The title officially belongs to New Aquitaine, which is home to an impressive 411 active cameras, accounting for 12% of the total camera fleet, despite having only 9% of the French population.

Following closely behind is Île-de-France with 359 cameras, and Occitanie with 350. Other notable regions include:

At the lower end of the spectrum are the overseas territories, featuring 40, 30, 22, and 8 cameras in Martinique, Guadeloupe, Réunion, and Guyane, respectively. In mainland France, Corsica takes the lead for the fewest cameras, with a mere 20 fixed devices scattered across the island.
