Last April, Chevrolet introduced the Silverado HD ZR2. Now it’s GMC’s turn to unveil the 2024 Sierra HD AT4X. Just like the Sierra 1500 AT4X and Canyon AT4X, this is a pickup geared for off-road driving.
Its mandate is to allow drivers to be able to tow, up to 18,500 pounds by the way, off the beaten path while enjoying a certain level of luxury and equipment. That’s according to Duncan Aldred, global vice president of Buick and GMC, during the presentation.
The Car Guide traveled to Asheville, NC to see this new pickup truck up close.
Equipped to work hard and go far
The GMC Sierra HD is a hard-working machine. With this new iteration, we want to allow consumers to work just as hard and continue to do so even off the paved roads. To achieve this, the AT4X version receives special treatment.
Its designers have included a 38 mm suspension raise, Multimatic DSSV shock absorbers, an electronically lockable rear differential, 35-inch Goodyear all-terrain tires, specific suspension arms, suspension ball joints of its own, a box larger transfer plate and aluminum skid plates.
This new version of the Sierra HD also benefits from an off-road driving mode. This one brings a panoply of adjustments, in particular to the transmission in order to better manage on a surface that is not asphalted.
Consumers have a choice of 6.6-liter gasoline or diesel V8 engines. By opting for diesel, you get 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft of torque. In both cases, we benefit from an automatic transmission staged over ten reports.
An even more extreme AEV version
In partnership with American Expedition Vehicles, GMC also produced an even more extreme version. This one stands out in particular for its steel bumpers, its front winch, its steel skid plates and its unique 18-inch rims.
The GMC Sierra DH AT4X is expected to hit dealerships across the province sometime next fall. Pricing will be disclosed shortly before it goes on sale.
