Barely achieved, this is a worrying record that could be broken in just one year. 2023 was the hottest year on record globally, but 2024 could well dethrone her. According to American scientists, there is a one in three chance that the situation will occur, and a 99% chance that 2024 one of the five hottest years on record. Among the indicators carefully scrutinized by meteorologists, the El Niño phenomenon, which appeared in 2023. Between last June and December, each month broke its own heat record.
Ocean warming
The amount of heat stored in the oceans is also worrying. “Another incident caught my attention: the ice floe in Antarctica. Last year we recorded the smallest ice floe ever seen in Antarctica. A record, by far”, adds Russ Vos, chief analysis at the American Oceanic and Atmospheric Observation Agency. The warming of the oceans causes a warming of the atmosphere, which also sees its humidity increase, with, as a result, more unpredictable weather and more conducive to violent weather phenomena.
