2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD: More Technologies and a More Muscular Diesel

Chevrolet today unveiled the new 2024 Silverado HD, which will go into production at the Oshawa plant and hit the market in the first half of 2023. Many of the changes it receives mirror those made to the Silverado 1500.

The company’s goal, as Vice President Scott Bell told us, was to make life easier for drivers who have to tow and do heavy work. It is for this reason that the truck is equipped with new technologies and a more muscular diesel engine.

Upgraded Duramax V8

While the 6.6-liter gasoline V8 remains unchanged for 2024, that’s not the case for the 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V8. This now generates 470 horsepower (+25) and 975 lb-ft (+65), with a 25% increase in available low-end torque for even easier and smoother maneuvering at low speeds or on hills. Its maximum towing capacity is 22,500 pounds.

Additionally, an upgraded version of the Allison 10-speed automatic transmission, providing more effective engine braking, will be included as standard with both engines. Remember that a six-speed gearbox currently accompanies the gasoline V8. Therefore, the gross vehicle weight rating with trailer increases from 24,000 to 26,000 pounds. Then, to be sure not to exceed this limit, Chevrolet adds sensors that will alert the driver if necessary.

This technology isn’t the only practical novelty for 2024, of course. These include adaptive cruise control and blind spot alert, both of which take into account the trailer attached behind the truck, as well as transparent trailer view, which also works with fifth-wheel and gooseneck hitches.

New look

For 2024, the Silverado HD adopts a modernized front, including reworked headlights positioned closer to the corners to accentuate the impression of width, in concert with the redesigned grille as well. Tow hooks are added as standard and the inscription “CHEVROLET” appears on the hood scoop, while six new body colors join the palette. New rim choices are also available.

Speaking of additions, the range will have two additional versions: ZR2 and High Country Midnight Edition. The premiere follows the example of the Silverado 1500 ZR2, but details and images will come later. As for the second, it is positioned at the top of the scale by offering a darkened appearance, marked by black chrome and other black touches.

Good breath of fresh air in the cabin

Finally, the 2024 Silverado HD is entitled to a much more refined and state-of-the-art cabin. LT trims and above get a 13.4-inch driver-facing center display and 12.3-inch digital instrumentation. The Google Assistant as well as Google Maps are an integral part of the multimedia system.

A wireless phone charger is integrated into the redesigned center console. Chevrolet notes that some controls have been redesigned for more user-friendly use and that storage throughout the cabin is now more generous, which is always good news.

Pricing and other details on the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD will be announced closer to on-sale next year. As an indication, the 2023 model currently sells from $59,248 including freight and delivery charges.
