2023 Mazda CX-50: five things to know

Mazda is adding an all-new SUV to its lineup, the CX-50. This model adopts a more adventurous look than other Mazda SUVs, following the trend of the automotive industry.

Here are five things to know about the 2023 Mazda CX-50.

Adventurous approach

While retaining a similar design to other Mazda SUVs, the CX-50’s aesthetic emanates from a more outdoorsy and adventure-oriented approach.

The more robust styling of the utility is explained by the bumpers and wheel arches in contrasting color. The domed fenders and large hood give it a muscular air.

The grille, two-tone rims, roof rails and spoiler complete the elements that define the vehicle’s adventurous look. In addition, a new body color has been added to the range: sand zircon.

Well-known engines

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 will be powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. A turbo version of the same engine is also in the catalog. Unfortunately, Mazda has yet to release the horsepower information.

As these two powertrains are also offered under the hood of the CX-5, we can expect similar performance figures. The first engine would therefore develop around 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, while the second would develop around 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft.

Finally, Mazda announces “electric powertrains, including a traditional hybrid model to come”. These electrified versions are unlikely to be offered in the model’s first year of sale.

Thought to go play outside

The adventurous theme does not apply only to the design, but also to the driving experience. The latest iteration of the i-ACTIV all-wheel drive comes standard on the CX-50, as does a six-speed automatic transmission.

In addition, the vehicle is equipped with the intelligent Mazda driving mode selection system, or Mi-Drive.

In addition, Mazda promises to provide “incredible towing capabilities.” The precise figures, however, remain to be confirmed.

Classic Mazda interior

On board, the cabin follows the trend of other Mazda products: clean lines, a high-placed screen and a center console equipped with multiple functions. A new interior color, Terracotta, is in the catalog.

The infotainment system will be compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto applications, like the rest of the Japanese emblem products. The head-up display and digital dials will also be accessible.

Made in Alabama

The Mazda CX-50 will be the brand’s first vehicle to be built at the new Mazda Toyota (MTM) production facility in Huntsville, Alabama.

As a guide, this is where the Toyota Corolla Cross is also manufactured. We can bet that several technologies will be shared between future vehicles …

Production of the Mazda CX-50 will begin in January 2022. Prices and different versions will be revealed closer to the market date.
