Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Beijing on Friday, where he is due to attend the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in the evening, Chinese state television announced.

Putin is due to meet with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping beforehand, CCTV said. It is a rare diplomatic tete-a-tete in a time of epidemic for the Chinese president, who has not received a foreign leader for almost two years.
