2021 Federal Election | Chinese Consulate General in Vancouver denies interference charges

(Vancouver) The Chinese Consulate General in Vancouver called a newspaper article that cited Canadian intelligence documents and described alleged efforts to oust candidates seen as hostile to Beijing as “libelous and discrediting” China.

The Consulate General said in a press release that it was unhappy and “strongly opposed” to the report.

He said China has never interfered in any way in Canada’s elections or internal affairs, and that the reports could damage the country’s relations with Canada.

The report from Globe and Mailreleased on Friday, says Canadian Security Intelligence Service documents describe Tong Xiaoling, then Chinese consul general in Vancouver, boasting of a strategy that led to the defeat of two Conservative MPs in 2021.

Conservatives Kenny Chiu, who had stood for Steveston-Richmond East, and Alice Wong, then the central MP for Richmond, both lost their seats in 2021 after suffering steep declines in their vote share.

The city of Richmond has a large Chinese immigrant population.
