(Toronto) More than a third of the country’s residents have no religious affiliation, the highest proportion ever recorded, according to Statistics Canada.

When Canadians were last asked about religion, in 2011, 23.9% said they had no religious affiliation.
The latest slice of 2021 census data also shows that the majority of the population, 53.3%, still identify as Christian, but the share that Christians represent is down from 67.3% in 2011. .
According to Statistics Canada, last year’s survey presents the most comprehensive picture of Canadians’ religious affiliations to date.
He explains that the questionnaire linked a list of 200 sample denominations that respondents had to look at before listing their religion, which encouraged them to be more specific in their answer.
For example, 12,625 people said they were Wiccans, while 1,380 said they were Scientologists.
