2021 box office in Quebec | Dune arrives good first

With receipts of nearly 5.5 million dollars, the feature film Dunes by Denis Villeneuve comes first, all categories combined, in the box office results of Quebec cinemas in 2021. The perfect family guide by Ricardo Trogi occupies 9and rank of this list and the first rank of Quebec films with receipts of 2.1 million.

As usual, the firm Cineac, specializing in the compilation of box office receipts, published its data on Thursday and a summary analysis of the situation for the whole of 2021.

According to figures compiled by Cineac, the theatrical cinema industry experienced, for the second year in a row, “its share of challenges due to the pandemic”. But its overall revenue increased from 45.1 to 72.2 million between 2020 and 2021 (all figures in this text have been rounded).

After Dunes, the films with the highest box office receipts were on the 25thand installment of the James Bond series, No Time to Die (4.4 million), followed by Fast and Furious 9 also called F9: The Fast Saga (3.9 million), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2.9 million) and Black Widow (2.7 million).

With revenues of $925,000, Maria Chapdelaine by Sébastien Pilote ranks second among Quebec works and 20and in the general classification. The time grabber of Francis Leclerc made $894,000, followed by sat from Yan England ($666,000) and ClubVinland by Benoit Pilon ($596,000).

Aline, a film by Valérie Lemercier, freely inspired by the life of Céline Dion, ranks sixth among Quebec films with $574,000.

The share of Quebec cinema in the overall box office increased slightly in 2021 with 12.4% (or 8.98 million) of box office receipts. In comparison, it was 11.7% (5.26 million) in 2020.

Obviously, it is American cinema that sits at the top of this table with 71.7% (51.8 million) in 2021. The fact remains that the increase recorded for films from here delights the Committee for the Recovery of Cinema in Quebec who hastened to publish a press release to share his comments.

“According to the box office compiled by Cinéac, which was confirmed by press release earlier today, the market share of Quebec cinema fell from 11.7% in 2020 to 12.4% in 2021. Remember that the shares market share of 2019, before the pandemic, was 7.5% and that the results for 2020 were the best for a decade”, we read in the response of the Recovery Committee made up of theater owners, producers and distributors .

Closed since December 20, cinemas have still not resumed their activities.
