Some 200,000 people demonstrated in France on Friday October 13 as part of the day of inter-union action on wages, the CGT announced to AFP. There were 92,500 of them, according to the Ministry of the Interior. This is significantly below the 14 days of action against pension reform which were organized between January and June. At its lowest point, the CGT had recorded nearly 900,000 demonstrators on June 6.
In Paris, around 20,000 people marched, again according to the CGT (9,100 according to the police headquarters). The Eiffel Tower was closed, as was the Louvre Museum briefly. In Marseille, there were 10,000 according to the CGT, 2,100 according to the prefecture, demanding power “live, work, age with dignity”. In Nantes, several thousand people also marched behind a banner “flammable inflation”, while in Rennes, there were between 3,000 according to the CFDT and 1,770 according to the prefecture.
More than six months after the battle against pension reform, this day of mobilization was organized by the CFDT, CGT, FO, CFTC, CFE-CGC, Unsa, Solidaires and FSU unions, and youth organizations, “against austerity” And “for wages and gender equality”, with 230 actions announced in France. Union leaders hope that this day will make it possible to weigh in on discussions with the government during the social conference on Monday at the Economic, Social and Environmental Council (Cese).
