According to associations, nearly 10,000 dolphins die each year in France. Trapped by fishermen’s nets, especially in the Bay of Biscay. Nearly 200 life-size images of dead dolphins were exhibited in Paris to appeal to as many people as possible.

200 photos of dead dolphins on the coasts of Gascony exhibited on the Esplanade des Invalides, in Paris. Wednesday, February 22, the images are sometimes unbearable, and are there to mark the spirits. “I find it unacceptable that in 2023, we continue to massacre dolphins in France with complete impunity”, laments a passer-by. The defendants are fishermen who accidentally capture dolphins. When the corpses of the victims are autopsied, there is no doubt about the origin of their death.

Insufficient measures?

Generally, the animal has a belly full of fresh fish. He was therefore eating at the time of his death. The death would therefore be of a violent and traumatic nature. For the moment, no regulations exist, but the Minister for the Ecological Transition recalled the measures taken: “We issued a decree a few weeks ago to require 200 boats to equip themselves with sound scarers. Half of them have been equipped with cameras.” According to the associations, this is insufficient. They are calling for a complete cessation of fishing in the Bay of Biscay over certain periods.
