It has been 20 years since the first models of automatic radars entered service. They saved thousands of lives. In 2002, there were 7,242 road deaths, compared to 3,350 last year.
Road, highway, and even on the street corner: for 20 years, automatic speed cameras have been part of our landscape, and they have changed behavior. It all started on the RN20, on October 27, 2003. Barely installed, they are already hated. 48 hours after the inauguration of the first radar, the device is already vandalized.
900 million euros in tax revenue
Since then, 4,600 cabins have been installed. Results: 14 million PV per year, for 900 million euros in tax revenue. On the road, the fear of radar is very real. “From 2002, when the measures were not yet put in place but we were talking about them, average speeds decreased”, says Pierre Lagache, vice-president of the League against road violence. But since 2009, the radar effect has run out of steam. Next step, new radars which will also control safety distances and telephone while driving, among other things.
