World Cancer Day takes place on Sunday February 4. 20 million new cases were recorded in 2022. This disease affects all continents and all categories of the population.

Cancer is a scourge that plagues the entire world. In 2022, the WHO recorded 20 million new cases and forecasts 35 million in 2050. This 77% increase is the consequence of aging and population growth around the world. There are also many risk factors to take into account, such as tobacco, alcohol, obesity and air pollution. Lung cancer is the most common, followed by breast cancer and then colorectal cancer.

Geographic disparities

The WHO also highlights geographical disparities. In 2022, 50% of cancers were diagnosed in Asia, compared to 25% in Europe and Russia and 6% in Africa. Cancer mainly affects the oldest sections of the population. 75% of diagnoses concern people over 55 years old. 10 million people will die from cancer in 2022.
