A 2-year-old child was seriously injured after being bitten by a dog late Sunday afternoon, August 25, in the street in Urrugne, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, franceinfo learned from a close source. The baby was bitten while he was with his parents and their dog, and they came across a man walking a Staffordshire bull terrier. It is a category 3 dog, according to information from France Bleu Pays Basque.
The bull terrier was kept on a leash and muzzled, as required by law. However, according to initial findings, the leash was not adapted to the dog’s mouth and was therefore ineffective. He then fought with the family dog. The child ended up between the two dogs and was bitten on the genitals.
The little boy was taken to the Côte Basque Hospital in Bayonne in a serious condition. He was operated on Monday morning. The parents filed a complaint for involuntary violence, France Bleu Pays Basque reports.
The owner of the dog, arrested in a drunken state, was taken into custody. He was released Monday afternoon and will have to undergo a psychiatric assessment. His dog was entrusted to the SPA of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. The dog biting protocol, including a behavioral assessment to estimate its degree of dangerousness, has been activated. It will be several weeks before the veterinarian gives his conclusions.
In early August, a 20-month-old girl was seriously injured after being bitten by a rottweiler-type dog on the terrace of a restaurant in Anglet, in the same department.
