2-1 loss | CF Montreal lowers flag to Real Salt Lake





The return to the sweet path of victory will wait for CF Montreal. Four days after their first loss in nine games, the Montreal troupe lost their flag again, 2-1 on Sunday against Real Salt Lake.

It started off well, though.

In an evening honoring him at Stade Saputo, on the 12and player quickly had a first – which turned out to be the only – reason to celebrate as Djordje Mihailovic made it 1-0 after just… 45 seconds of action. The play was the work of Joaquin Torres, who delivered a superb pass to Ahmed Hamdi in the box. He passed on to Mihailovic, who only had to kick to register his seventh of the season.

It was then that things went wrong.

The Montreal defense and its goalkeeper Sebastian Breza were very busy in the first half, Real Salt Lake being as threatening as the gray clouds flying over the stadium.

At the 29and, Breza closed the door with the tip of his hand on a header from Bobby Wood. Four minutes later, he said no to a strike from Justin Meram. At the 43and, he blocked spectacularly, with his right shoulder, a strike from Wood left alone in front of the goal. The crowd, numbering 14,205, thanked the goalkeeper in due form.

Real Salt Lake continued in the same vein after halftime. At the 54andJusten Glad took advantage of a corner kick to score with a header.

Just over 10 minutes later, Sergio Cordova made it 2-1 with a low shot. A cold shower a few minutes before the rain arrives at Stade Saputo.

CF Montreal was more insistent late in the game, but without success.

The next game for Wilfried Nancy’s squad will take place on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Stade Saputo. Forge FC will be in attendance for the quarter-finals of the Canadian Championship.
