And just like that, CF Montreal’s run in the League Cup comes to an end. They lost 2-0 in the round of 16 against the Union on Friday night in Philadelphia.
It’s not for lack of trying, though. After a more or less successful first half, Montreal came out of the blocks with renewed desire in the second period, practically not giving the home team the ball. Without, however, managing to really worry goalkeeper Andre Blake in front of the Union goal.
The damage had been done just before the half-time whistle. In the 46th minutee minute of the first, Tai Baribo seized a rebound given by Jonathan Sirois at the mouth of the net to go for what seemed for a long time to be the only goal of the match.
But at the very end of the match, in the 96th minuteeafter yet another anemic Montreal push, Philadelphia came out on the counterattack. Baribo, again, found himself alone in front of Sirois, and easily threaded the needle to confirm his team’s victory, and nail the final nail in the Montrealers’ coffin.
More details will follow.
