Former Justice Louis LeBel, who served for 14 years on the Supreme Court of Canada, died Thursday at the age of 83.
“He bequeaths a legal legacy of eloquently written decisions, particularly in administrative law, international law, as well as labor law,” said Chief Justice of Canada Richard Wagner in a press release. The latter stressed that he was “a man of exemplary wisdom and collegiality”.
During his three decades on the bench, Mr. LeBel was first appointed as a judge of the Quebec Court of Appeal on June 28, 1984.
He was then appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada on January 7, 2000, where he served until his retirement on November 30, 2014.
His knowledge of Quebec civil law and his “love for it were incomparable,” said Justice Wagner.
Mr. LeBel studied at the Jesuit College, Laval University and the University of Toronto.
