There are hits that never stop playing at festive evenings, there are songs that die out as quickly as they were born. And then there are pieces that are reborn as if by magic under the influence of a film or an advertisement. This is the case of Mass Anaesthesia, a piece composed in 2006 by the Breton group “Mediavolo”.

No marketing or cinema for the Brest group, this time the enchanted fairy is called TikTok or Instagram. The song has been covered thousands of times by influencers around the world. The origin of this success was a simple video posted on the social network TikTok, by a Canadian teenager.

Behind this viral post Angel Cove, 17 years old from New Brunswick in northeastern Canada. “When I found you on Spotify you had 50 listeners a month and I was like this band is amazing. Why are they underrated. Why don’t people listen to them?” wonders the young girl on videophone with the group. “Among the people who follow it, there are quite a few people who have covered the sound. It gives other TikTokers the opportunity to discover this song,” reacts Géraldine Le Cocq, singer and songwriter of the group Mediavolo.

4 million listens

In just a few months, the song was covered by thousands of teenagers all over the world. On online listening platforms, the counters are going crazy, the song has reached nearly four million streams. Good news for these musicians who wrote this song more than 18 years ago. “We hadn’t landed any music but we had lowered our ambitions a bit for a long time, we’re very surprised,” confides guitarist Jacques Henry.

The profile of adolescents who return Mass Anaesthesia is fairly uniform. With its evanescent pop and dreamlike melodies, the song essentially reaches a niche audience, fans of Japanese culture and manga.. It’s difficult to perform abroad, so, to satisfy these new fans, Mediavolo musicians have started publishing videos on social networks.
