150 costumes and sets from Angers Nantes Opéra on display at the Palais des Congrès

Colors, fabrics, seams… at the Odyssea convention center located along the coast of Saint-Jean-de-Monts, we put on the colors of the opera. More precisely that of Angers Nantes Opéra, who lends 150 of these sets and costumes. A free exhibition that wants to open the doors of this art to all.

It’s great, I would like the same!

The course allows you to circulate between the different styles of costumes. It is a return to the past. One can imagine how people lived at that time “Notes Jocelyne. Among these accoutrements, a gold and black flared dress three meters long, with small dead leaves sewn to its end, is impressive.” Who dared to wear such a dress? ” asks Jean, accompanied by his companion Collette. ” It’s great, I would like the same! ” she exclaims, a bit jealous.

A tribute to Mélissande’s long hair

This dress is actually worn by Mélissande in the play “Péléas et Mélissande” played for the first time in 1902. Alain Surrans, the director of Angers Nantes Opéra, explains the reasons for such a result. ” We are in an important scene of the play where Péléas tries to serenade Mélissande, perched at the top of his tower. The idea of the production designer and director was therefore to play with the length of the dress, reminiscent of the heroine’s long hair. “.

A magnificent visual result but which is not the only one. Between the kimonos, the animal costumes for children or even videos retracing the techniques of make-up or the development of a decor, there is plenty to see. The exhibition is open until August 28.
