In the summer of 2023, more than 150 dehydrated cats and dogs were discovered in the apartment of a couple from Nice. Their son spoke of his mother’s Noah syndrome, a disorder that results in excessive hoarding of animals.

Last summer, in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes), the police intervened in a neighborhood conflict. But upon arriving at the scene, the police discovered that a couple was living with 159 cats and seven dogs, in only 80m2. Dehydrated, sick, all the animals were seized and taken into shelters. On Wednesday April 3, the couple was tried by the Nice court, and received a one-year suspended prison sentence, 100,000 euros in damages, and a ban on owning animals.

“When we end up here, we have magistrates who listen to us”

For associations defending the animal cause, this is a victory. “When we end up here, we have magistrates who listen to us”, welcomes Anne-Marie David, head of the Arpa association. Behind this case, Noah syndrome, a mental disorder which pushes sufferers to accumulate pets in disproportionate proportions.
