This is one of the unknowns of this presidential election: abstention. There are those who will not vote, but there are also those who are incorrectly registered on the electoral lists. Nearly 7.5 million French people, or 15% of voters, are currently registered on a list that does not correspond to their place of residence. They have until March 4 to fix it.
Armed with a handful of leaflets, young people from the “Tous Élects” association are trying to convince students to re-register on the electoral lists. Some, following a move, are registered in the wrong polling station. They are nicknamed the “badly registered”. By scanning the QR code of the leaflet, they are guided to complete their registration. Objective of the association: to fight against abstention. According to INSEE, 94% of French people of voting age are registered on the electoral lists, but 15% of them are incorrectly registered and could see their chance of voting compromised.
As the presidential election approaches, mis-registration is a concern. A fact-finding mission was therefore launched at the National Assembly in December 2021. Among the proposals: allow any voter to vote in the municipality of their choice, during the presidential and European elections. “It requires completely rethinking the management of electoral lists”, believes Céline Braconnier, director of Sciences-Po in Saint-Germain-en-Laye (Yvelines). The wrongly registered have until March 4 to complete their final steps and register at the correct address.
