In the aftermath of the collapse of the Marmolada glacier in Italy, rescuers continued search operations on Monday, July 4. Seven bodies have been found, but 14 people are reported missing by their relatives.

200 m long and 80 m high: this is the extent of the area left gaping, following the collapse of part of the Marmolada glacier (Italy). All day, Monday, July 4, helicopters flew over the massif, and rescuers walked the area of the avalanche. To understand the difficulty of the task, we must review the images of the disaster. Thousands of tons of ice and rocks plunged at over 200 km/h.

When we got to the site, it was a terrible scenario. There were blocks of ice from the rocks everywhere. We started looking, and with other colleagues, we found the first bodies“, says Luigi Fenichetti, from the Italian Alpine Rescue. Based on the number of vehicles that have remained motionless at the foot of the glacier, the investigators estimate that around ten people are still missing. A few relatives have arrived and are waiting in the anguish of information. The local residents expected such a tragedy. They saw the glacier melt spectacularly, and lose 30% of its surface in ten years.
