A 39-year-old man was sentenced to 14 months in prison by the Nîmes criminal court on Monday. This driver had achieved the “feat” of being arrested for driving without a license and without insurance three times in the same year, between February and November 2021. “You have accumulated all possible and imaginable infractions. Do you wait until you end up in jail to stop driving ?” President Jérôme Reynes set the tone from the start facing the defendant who cashes without showing anything or almost. Without saying much either, except that he would like to be able to pass his license, find a normal life and a job which for the moment eludes him precisely because he cannot move.
Two other drivers sentenced
Difficult, under these conditions, to say if the man is really conscious of the seriousness of his situation. The public prosecutor, Willy Lubin, reminds him of this in his requisitions: “This man is a walking danger and I don’t understand why he appears free. Imagine if he had killed someone. I am ashamed. Justice is not credible in leaving such an individual free“. An analysis that his lawyer does not share: ” Jail won’t change anything” retorts his lawyer, Maître Isabelle Viremouneix. “What is needed is to force him to retake his license and it is not in detention that he will obtain it“. It is however behind bars that he will spend the next 14 months.
Two other motorists, who were absent from the hearing, were also sentenced respectively to one year and 18 months in prison also for driving without a license, without insurance or under narcotics. Sometimes some speeders combined the three offenses the same time.
