14 injured, including two serious, after roller coaster accident

Visitors hit branches of a fallen tree near the attraction due to strong winds, authorities said.

Fourteen people were injured after a tree fell on a roller coaster at the PortAventura World theme park in Vila-seca, Catalonia (Spain), on Sunday February 11. Five of them were hospitalized.

“An episode of violent winds” caused the “fall of a tree near the attraction”on which “a few branches hit the customers who were on board”explained the company managing the park in a press release.

A spokesperson for the Catalan police told AFP that the parts of the tree had fallen on one of the “Tomahawk roller coaster cars”presented as a children’s attraction on the park’s website.

Among the five people hospitalized, two are “in critical condition” And “three in less serious condition”announced the Catalan emergency services in a message about, without further details on the victims. Regional police have opened an investigation.
