Global Affairs Canada confirmed Sunday evening that 130 Canadians, permanent residents and members of their families were able to leave the Gaza Strip over the weekend.
The Rafah border crossing in the southern Gaza Strip was reopened to foreign nationals on Saturday. Since then, 130 Canadians and their family members have been able to cross to Egypt, where they can stay for 3 days while they organize the rest of their trip.
In total, 600 Canadian nationals have been able to flee the Gaza Strip since the start of the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
“Canada continues to work with all parties concerned to ensure that Canadian citizens, permanent residents and their eligible family members currently in Gaza can leave the country quickly and safely,” writes Global Affairs Canada in a press release.
After a seven-day truce, fighting resumed Friday in the besieged Gaza Strip. Israel notably carried out new strikes on Sunday which targeted the large city of Khan Younes in the south.
