“117,000 5th grade middle school students are vaccinated” against papillomaviruses, or “13 to 15%” of them, announced Sunday March 3 the Minister Delegate in charge of Health and Prevention Frédéric Valletoux, guest of Political Issues on France Inter and Franceinfo TV.
The minister admits that the vaccination campaign launched in October in colleges “did not give all that [les autorités souhaitaient]”, the Ministry of Health having set last September the figure of at least 30% of 5th grade students vaccinated. Frédéric Valletoux specifies that this objective was set on the basis of a “experiment carried out in the Grand Est region”where after two years, this rate of 30% had been reached.
Frédéric Valletoux indicates that a communication campaign will be relaunched “in spring” for the attention of parents of students currently in 6th grade, who will enter 5th grade at the next school year. Parental consent is required for their child to be vaccinated. Vaccination is voluntary and free.
At the end of October, the general secretariat of Catholic education recommended to private colleges under contract to suspend the vaccination campaign, “precautionary reason”, after the death of a schoolboy, victim of a fall following post-vaccination discomfort. The investigation carried out by the regional health agency of Pays de la Loire ruled out any link between the death of the teenager and the vaccine product.
