According to a national study by Public Health France, published on Tuesday June 20, 13% of children aged 6 to 11 are affected by at least one mental health disorder.

In France, 13% of children attending school 6 at age 11 have at least one probable mental health disorder. In detail, 5.6% of children suffer from emotional disorder, 6.6% from oppositional disorder (angry mood, provocative behavior, etc.) and 3.2% from inattention disorder and or of hyperactivity. Some of these pathologies can be resolved easily.

“Two years of waiting” to see a specialist

But some parents find it difficult to get their hands on a specialist quickly. “The psychiatrist, the psychologist, but also the speech therapist, today is a two-year wait”, deplores Laurent Zameczkowski, spokesperson for the association of parents of students in public education (PEEP). Public Health France specifies that this study will be regularly renewed. For their part, child psychiatry professionals hope for the establishment of a prevention policy.
