1,200 jobs created in Dunkirk thanks to the establishment of a battery factory

This is very good news for employment in the North: the creation of an electric battery factory in Dunkirk will lead to the creation of 1,200 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs, according to Olivier Dufour, the co-founder of the Verkor company who therefore chose the city of Jean Bart to create this factory. The mayor of Dunkirk, Patrice Vergriete, announces even more impressive figures: “A thousand industrial jobs created in Dunkirk on the coast by 2024, then a thousand additional jobs created by 2030″. It will therefore be a gigafactory, in other words a battery manufacturing plant. An announcement also made by Emmanuel Macron in an interview with the Voice of the North in which the president announces for his part a total of 4000 jobs: “1200 direct jobs and 3000 indirect jobs“.

The Verkor company from Isère chose the city of Jean Bart to set up its first European gigafactory, a factory where electric batteries will be manufactured, in particular for the Renault manufacturer. It is in particular the proximity of the port of Dunkirk that was decisive in the choice to set up in Dunkirk. Other factors played a role, explains Olivier Dufour, co-founder of the company, such as the availability of land and the work accomplished by local elected officials.

In a statement, the mayor of the city indicates that “the plant will produce, from 2024, 300,000 car batteries per year, which corresponds to 16 GWh. It wants to gradually increase in capacity to reach 32 GWh and even potentially 50 GWh in 2030, with batteries intended for other functions (scooters, planes, trucks, data centers, etc.)“.

The creation of a “battery valley” in Hauts-de-France

Xavier Bertrand, the president of Hauts-de-France also salutes “very good news for Hauts-de-France“. Tells him that this establishment will create nearly 2,000 direct jobs and 5,000 indirect jobs. Beyond jobs, Xavier Bertrand also salutes “the creation of a real battery sector in Hauts-de-France“. The region evokes a total investment of nearly 2.5 billion euros.

This gigafactory is indeed the third announced in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais, after that of ACC in Douvrin, and that of Envision in Douai, which should lead to the creation of 1,400 to 2,000 jobs respectively by 2030 for ACC. in Douvrin, and 1,200 jobs for Envision in Douai.
