A year after Glasgow, the dGlobal iplomacy is once again meeting at the bedside of the climate. Some 200 countries are meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh (Egypt) from Sunday November 6 for the 27th UN climate conference, more commonly known as COP27. They have two weeks to accelerate the fight against greenhouse gas emissions including the impacts that are sweeping the world. SFollow our live.
“A faster and braver climate action”. Historic floods in Pakistan, repeated heat waves in Europe, hurricanes, fires, droughts… The fight for the climate is a “matter of life or death, for our safety today and for our survival tomorrow”, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres recently insisted. Greenhouse gas emissions must indeed fall by 45% by 2030 to have a chance of limiting warming to 1.5°C compared to the pre-industrial era, the most ambitious objective of the Paris agreement.
Emmanuel Macron on site earlier than expected. The Head of State arrives in Sharm el-Sheikh on Sunday, after the postponement of the start of the La Route du Rhum which he was to attend in Saint-Malo. French President Emmanuel Macron will speak Monday afternoon at COP27. France also said “opened” to discuss the financial compensation of “loss and damage” already suffered by poor countries due to climate change, but does not want a new fund.
Why Sharm el-Sheikh? Each year, a new region-zone of the world hosts the summit. In 2022, it is therefore the turn of Africa. The city resort has already hosted the COP14 of biodiversity in 2018.
