12-year-old golfer qualifies for Canadian Women’s Open

(Ottawa) Lucy Lin, a 12-year-old golfer from Vancouver, has earned one of four spots available for the Canadian Women’s Open to be played over the weekend in Ottawa.

Lin, the youngest player to ever qualify for the prestigious Canadian tournament, shot 74, two strokes over par, in the final qualifying round on Monday at Marshes Golf Club in Ottawa .

Lin finished two shots behind co-leaders Michelle Liu of Vancouver and Gianna Clemente of Estero, Fla. Vanessa Zhang of Vancouver was third, one stroke behind Liu and Clemente.

The final qualifying stage brought together 22 golfers playing a single round. The golfers with the top four scores qualified for the opening round of the Canadian Open on Thursday.

The round was interrupted several times due to bad weather.

Defending champion Jin Young Ko and Canadian star Brooke Henderson will be two of the tournament’s headliners. The competition will feature 82 of the top 100 CME Globe golfers, including 18 of the top 20.

The tournament will also bring together 18 golfers from Canada, including the renowned Lorie Kane, who will be in her 30e and last appearance at the tournament as a participant in the Canadian Open.

A member of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame and the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, Kane, who hails from Charlottetown, made his Canadian Open debut in 1991 and has appeared in all 29 tournaments since.
