12 Stradivari, Janine Jansen and Antonio Pappano

It is at the same time a popular recital of short pieces for violin, worthy of the marvelous Romance by Gil Shaham at DG, and a unique project. J&A Beare, renowned violin dealer, brought together twelve stradivarius, designed between 1680 and 1734, having belonged to legends in the history of music: Henri Vieuxtemps, Fritz Kreisler, Bronislaw Huberman, Nathan Milstein, Ida Handel, etc. In previous projects of this type (never with so many stradivarius), where the same piece was played on various instruments, Janine Jansen had instead chosen the scores according to the perceived characters of the violins. Major deviations should not be expected, although in terms of power or color there may be variations. The moment we jumped up and said, “Which one is this?” Was at track 6, a transcription of Lenski’s tune. It was Jansen’s own violin, which we are also moved to hear the great Milstein’s instrument sound so well. All this is a beautiful recital, from an original angle.
