12 people were poisoned by botulism and another died after consuming canned sardines made by a Bordeaux restaurateur. The Departmental Directorate for Population Protection has confirmed that it is indeed sardines which are involved.

On the morning of Wednesday September 13, a health check was in progress at “cheers Wine Bar”, a restaurant in Bordeaux (Gironde). It was in this establishment that the 32-year-old young woman who died on Tuesday evening as a result of botulism poisoning dined. In this district of downtown Bordeaux, tourists and residents are shocked. During a press conference late Wednesday morning, the Departmental Directorate for Population Protection confirmed that it is indeed the canned sardines manufactured by the restaurateur which are in question.

An international alert launched

At Bordeaux University Hospital, seven people are in intensive care and one is under surveillance keep on going. All are Canadian, American or German tourists. Other patients are hospitalized in Spain and Germany. The toll on Wednesday was 12 people poisoned by botulism. An international alert is launched to find other potentially intoxicated consumers, because if the symptoms are mild at first, they can suddenly worsen.
