The majority of the hostages have been freed. In total, 12 of the 17 members of the group of North American missionaries and their relatives kidnapped by a gang in Haiti, were released Thursday, December 16, announced to AFP the spokesman of the national police, Gary Roses. October 16, the group was kidnapped after a visit to an orphanage, west of the capital Port-au-Prince, in the heart of an area under the control of one of Haiti’s main gangs. The kidnappers subsequently claimed $ 17 million, or $ 1 million per hostage.
“We confirm the release of the 12 who remained” hostages, declared by telephone Gary Desrosiers, without power “give more details for the moment”. Five members of the group, made up of US citizens and one Canadian citizen, had previously been released by the gang, two in November and three in early December.
Following their kidnapping, Christian Aid Ministries, the religious organization to which they belong, had specified that the group consisted of 12 adults, whose age is between 18 and 48 years, and five children aged 8 months, 3 , 6, 13 and 15 years old.
Haiti is classified as a country in the red zone by the United States which advises its nationals not to go there, in particular because of the numerous kidnappings of which “victims regularly include US citizens.”
