This unpublished series in four episodes of the magazine “1:15 p.m. on Sunday” (Twitter, #1:15 p.m.), signeous Peggy Leroy, Vincent Fichmann and Mathilde Rougeron, is dedicated to Winston Churchill (1874-1965). A historical personality whose career and battles resonate particularly today, since the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army on February 24, 2022. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was not mistaken on the 8 March 2022, when he addressed the UK Parliament.
“We will not give up and we will not lose. We will fight until the end, at sea, in the air. We will fight for our land, no matter what, in the forests, in the fields, on the shores, in the streets…” These words echoed those spoken by Churchill in the House of Commons in June 1940 after British forces had to leave France in the face of the advancing German army.
The English lion and General de Gaulle
Churchill and de Gaulle will continue the war together and believe in a victory, yet still so distant. The English managed to take all his people behind him and the French rallied volunteers to continue the fight alongside the British. In December 1941, the war took a new turn. The United States enters the conflict and forces Winston Churchill to make choices. It’s time for memorable face-to-face between the English lion and General de Gaulle, that of betrayals…
The June 1944 landing was a success, Germany retreated and the leader of Free France imposed himself at the head of a provisional government in France. The two men no longer speak to each other as victory looms. Time will do its work and they will see each other again. A form of friendship on a background of nostalgia for the war years will even be born between these two giants…
