“1:15 p.m. on Sunday”. Churchill > Episodes 1 & 2 – France 2 – March 20, 2022

This unpublished series in four episodes of the magazine 1:15 p.m. on Sunday” (Twitter, #1:15 p.m.), signed Peggy Leroy, Vincent Fichmann and Mathilde Rougeron, is dedicated to Winston Churchill (1874-1965). A historical personality whose career and battles resonate particularly today, since the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army on February 24, 2022. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was not mistaken on the 8 March 2022, when he addressed the UK Parliament.

“We will not give up and we will not lose. We will fight until the end, at sea, in the air. We will fight for our land, no matter what, in the forests, in the fields, on the shores, in the streets…” These words echoed those spoken by Churchill in the House of Commons in June 1940 after British forces had to leave France in the face of the advancing German army.

A bulwark against Nazism

Like President Zelensky, Winston Churchill became a warlord in a flash. What was the daily life of the lover of jokes, whiskey and cigars? How did he make the decisions that helped lead the Allies to victory? How did he manage for more than a year, until the Russians, then the Americans, entered the war, to make his country a bulwark against Nazism?

His speeches marked history. The first of them is that of May 13, 1940, pronounced in front of the British deputies. That day, he announces “blood, sweat and tears” to come. General de Gaulle decides to go into exile in England on June 17, 1940, after Marshal Pétain’s call to stop the fight. There he finds Winston Churchill, the last European leader who did not capitulate…
