Glyptics is the art of engraving fine stones, in relief or in hollow. One of his great masters in France, Philippe Nicolas, exceptionally opened the doors of his workshop to the magazine “1:15 p.m. on Saturday” (Twitter, #1:15 p.m.)for this portrait by Paul Degenève and Benoît Viudès.
It is at the heart of the Cartier house that this sculptor engraver, trained at the Ecole Boulle and at the Beaux-Arts, creates unique pieces, treasures that sometimes take him more than two years of work.
A Master of art who transmits his know-how
Philippe Nicolas has held the title of Master of Art since 2008. It has been awarded for life since 1994 “to professionals in the arts and crafts with remarkable and rare know-how, who engage for three years in a process of transmission to a student”according to the Ministry of Culture.
A Master of Art is a “professional of excellence recognized by his peers for his experience, his expertise and his teaching skills. He must be able to transmit his knowledge and his knack to a student so that he perpetuates them”. His career soon coming to an end, Philippe Nicolas is currently training his next generation…
