A tale of horror. An 11-year-old student, survivor of the shooting at a school in Uvalde, Texas, said she covered herself in blood and played dead to escape the shooter who had just killed her classmates and teachers. This is the first known testimony from a survivor of this shooting.
In a testimony to CNN (in English)not filmed and without a direct quote, Miah Cerrillo explained that he used the mobile phone of a dead teacher to call the police and ask them to intervene in the face of the 18-year-old teenager, who massacred 19 children and two teachers.
That morning, she and her classmates were watching the cartoon lilo and stitch when the two teachers learned that there was a shooter in the school. One of them tried to close the classroom door, but the shooter was already there. Salvador Ramos looked at the teacher, told her “good night” then shot him, before shooting down his colleague and then some students. Miah was injured in the shoulder and head by shrapnel.
Then the shooter opened a door to a second classroom. She heard shots, screams. Salvador Ramos put sad music on speakerphone, according to Miah Cerrillo. With the deceased teacher’s phone, the little girl and a friend pleaded with the police to intervene: “Come on, please…we have a problem”.
Frightened by the return of the shooter to their class, she says she plunged her hands into the blood of a classmate, whose corpse was next to her, to smear it all over her and play dead. She thought then, she said, that the police had still not arrived on the scene. The teenager told CNN she was too scared to speak to a man or in front of a camera, but wanted people to know what happened in that classroom.
