The 11-year-old boy who was hit by a puck during a minor hockey league exercise on Tuesday in Saint-Eustache died in hospital.
The Saint-Eustache City Police Department confirmed his death in a press release on Friday. The police add that they have informed the Quebec coroner’s office, which will investigate the circumstances of this death.
The facts occurred around 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Walter-Buswell arena in Saint-Eustache, north of Montreal. Police and ambulance services responded to a 9-1-1 call for medical assistance. According to police, the boy was transported to a Montreal hospital, where he was in intensive care.
Police say the boy was accidentally hit by a puck and was wearing all the required protective gear.
Several media outlets reported that the boy was hit in the neck by a puck, but police have not confirmed this information.
A Hockey Quebec spokesperson says that the neck guard, or throat guard, is an integral part of a player’s equipment.
The police indicated earlier this week that the investigative steps carried out so far concluded that it was “an unfortunate accident”.
